Background

I was hanging out with my cousins in France over winter break one year. Our parents were on a shopping trip for a couple of hours so we decided to watch a movie. He told me it was a French movie that he loved to watch and wanted me to see. I don’t have a tendency of liking French movies but he convinced me that I would laugh so I decided to give it a try.

Plot

Les Tuches is about this poor, hillbilly family from Boozolle with a father that is unemployed with commission from the government, a mother who stays at home and always participates in the lottery and using the same numbers, an eldest son that is a dumb wannabe rapper, and airhead older sister, a grandma who earned her name from the alcohol she consumes, and the youngest son who is a genius but hides it to fit in with the rest of his family. One day after years of waiting, the mom wins 100,000,000 euros in the lottery. The whole family decides to pack everything up hand move to Monaco a country for the wealthy. The residents are welcoming at all and after being put in their place they try to change and fit into the wealthy entourage by spending tons of money on a big house and french fry food truck, a fancy car, and a yacht. The family brings their hillbilly ways to the country which shocks their residents. Knowing they do not know how to keep track of their money, a man goes to Jeff Tuche, the head of the family, to get him to invest in their soccer team because he knows Mr. Tuche loves soccer. Jeff happily agrees to invest the rest of their money into the project because he thinks it will make his youngest son proud. Knowing it was a trap the youngest son steals the money his dad had given the man and invests it in a Chinese mine. Not knowing what the son had done, Jeff becomes sad about his bad investment and the loss of the rest of their money. They then decide to go back to Boozolle. A year later the son gets a call from the Chinese mine saying he had doubled the original about they had won at the lottery. This time the family made smarter choices with their money.

Why I enjoy this movie

I really liked this movie because it had a bunch of french jokes in it. It was very funny seeing how this newly rich hillbilly family was standing out in the middle of all the snobby rich Monegasques. My favorite character was the grandma because she spoke only gibberish.

Why I recommend it

I know it is in a different language but I still recommend this movie to anyone who wants to learn a little about French culture. There are a lot of people in France whose goal is to be unemployed while getting a commission from the government because they are too lazy to work. This movie showed that but it made it funny.

Other’s reaction

I found a like to the trailer (link). You can switch the subtitles to English to make it easier to understand. In the comments of the trailer, people are talking about how great it is, and have inserted some of the jokes that appear in the movie. I know it is in a different language, but it is totally worth it.

Comparison to other movies

I’ve been forced to watch other French movies with my parents because they want me to keep my French culture. This movie wasn’t like other French movies because it wasn’t boring and it made me learn a little bit more about the people than in others. Their jokes were easy to follow and were a little dumb like the family.
